Weybridge to Woking via New Haw, West Byfleet, Woodham, & canal towpath. |
Weybridge to New Haw via the Lakes
The route is described from Weybridge railway station. It includes a section of footpath, where walking may be advisable in places. It also involves lifting your bike up a steep flight of steps, and down the other side. If you think this may be a problem for you, then take route 10 as far as New Haw.
From Weybridge station, cross to the South (Brooklands) side of the railway bridge, and turn immediately right into the car park. Follow the railway through the car park, down a wide path, and through to Lonsdale Road. Turn right after 300m over a railway bridge ('Bucket Bridge'), then left down a path following the North side of the railway. This path takes you over the River Wey on a footbridge, then along between the railway embankment and a lake, to a gate on another railway embankment. Here you must lift your bike up the steps, carefully cross the line, and down the other side. Although this is not the main railway line, trains regularly use it, so take great care before each person crosses to ensure that no train is coming. If you have children with you, leave them at the foot of the steps while you take your bike across, then retunt to assist each one in turn. After the railway, follow the path through the fields, and continue in the same direction when it joins a farm track. When the track bends left, continue along a narrow path to Byfleet Road, which you cross to reach New Haw lock on the Wey canal (km, m), joining the canalside route 10.
New Haw to Woking
Turn left along the canal towpath, remembering to treat other users with consideration. Just after the motorway bridge, at the canal junction, take the footbridge onto the Basingstoke canal towpath. This leads to West Byfleet (km, m) and Woking (km, m). To visit Woking town centre, leave the towpath when it emerges on a road bridge in sight of the towns fortress-like walls. Follow the pavement for about 200 metres, then use the light-controlled crossing over the dual carriageway road (km, m).
Continuing along the towpath will take you to Brookwood, Deepcut locks, Frimley Green, Ash Vale, Aldershot, and beyond.
