Weybridge to Chessington

via Hersham, Esher & Claygate

Weybridge to Hersham

From the Quadrant, follow Church Street to the mini-roundabout by the church, and turn right into Church Path (footpath). Continue along the back of Churchfields car park, follow round to the right at the recreation ground, and turn left at the barrier. Turn right at the next barrier into Churchfields Avenue. Turn left into the busy Hanger Hill, then right at the top of the hill into Prince's Road. At the other end of Prince's road, turn right into the very busy Queens Road (using the pedestrian island if necessary), and left before the railway bridge into Oatlands Avenue. When the road curves around to the left towards Cleves School, continue along a path between the school field and the railway. This path emerges onto the busy Ashley Road, where it is best to walk across the road before crossing the railway bridge (Sir Richard's Bridge) (2.3km, 1.4M).

You are now on Queens Road again, the A317. The next 1km towards Hersham is a narrow, dangerous stretch of busy main road where there have been a number of accidents involving cyclists in recent years. It cannot be recommended for cycling, but unfortunately there is no real alternative without a long diversion. However it does have a little-used footway on its north side. As a cyclist you therefore have the choice of risking your life on the road, or becoming a temporary pedestrian, or breaking the law by riding on the footway.

At the next roundabout, fork right into Queens Road for Hersham Village (3.8km, 2.4M), or take the cycle path alongside the Hersham bypass (Queensway) if you are continuing towards Esher.

On the Hersham bypass, the eastbound cycle path is on the pavement. In the other direction, the path is marked on the side of the road. The Old Esher Road provides a quiet alternative to the main Esher Road near Hersham. This is the Mole Road junction.

Hersham to Esher

On the Hersham Bypass (Queensway), the cycle path continues along the side of the road past the Robinsway traffic lights and the Barley Mow roundabout, along Esher Road, and across the River Mole at Emlyn Bridge to the roundabout at the foot of Lammas Lane.

If starting from Hersham Green, follow Molesey Road and take the second right into Thrupps Lane. Follow this round to the left into Mole Road, then round to the right into Old Esher Road, which ends at the Esher Road dual carriageway. This is not a safe road to cross here to join the eastbound cycle path; an alternative is to use the footpath by becoming a pedestrian. If you do decide to break the law by riding on the footpath, do take special care when passing the houses, to avoid running into anyone coming out of a gate.

Riders coming from Esher on the Esher Road cycle path, approaching the junction with Old Esher Road at Hersham. Crossing the River Mole near Esher. Parking on the cycle path may be inconsiderate, but it's only illegal if the white line is continuous.

At Lammas Lane, the cycle path disappears and the road again becomes narrow and dangerous for cycles The safest way to get from here to Esher is to follow the wide footpath on the southeast (right-hand when approaching Esher) side of Lammas Lane.

The centre of Esher can only be described as a race-track, no place to be on a bicycle. Perhaps the best way through, until you have had the opportunity to make your own judgement, is to walk down Park Road and cross at the traffic lights to the Bear Hotel (2.0km, 1.3M).

Esher to Claygate

If you are continuing to Claygate, turn into Claremont Lane (The A244 Leatherhead Road) and immediately left into Esher Park Avenue. At a T-junction, turn right into Littleworth Avenue and immediately left into Milbourn Lane. On the right is the junction with route 7 in Littleworth Common Road.

For Claygate centre, continue on Milbourn Lane which becomes Hare Lane, then fork left into Raleigh Drive and right into Loseberry Road, to avoid the worst part of Hare Lane onto which you then turn left again. Follow Hare Lane under the railway and round to the right to find the centre of Claygate (1.7km, 1.1M).

Claygate to Chessington

Continue along Hare Lane, Church Road, and Fee Farm Road to join a bridleway onto Claygate Common. At the other side of the common, a bridleway to the right is the end of route 7. For Chessington, cross this bridleway and follow a path up to Ruxley Tower and across a bridge over the A3 Esher bypass. About 200m after the bridge, the path turns left and passes Barwell Court farm before joining a tarmac lane down to the main A243 Hook - Leatherhead road. Go straight across into Garrison Lane, where Chessington South station is on your left (2.1km, 1.3M).
