Weybridge to Staines via Chertsey Bridge, Laleham, & Thames path. |
This is a good route to use if you need to cycle to a large shopping centre from the Weybridge end of Elmbridge, or just want a pleasant riverside ride. It is a pleasant alternative to a roadside section of national cycle route 4,and follows the same route between Weybridge and Chertsey Meads. About 7 miles each way, most of it is on quiet roads and traffic-free paths. If cycling with children, particular care is needed between Weybridge and Addlestone Moor, at Chertsey Bridge, and in Staines. The route description starts at The Quadrant, Weybridge, the junction of Heath Road, Church Street and Bridge Road.
Total distance, 10.7km, 6.7m
Weybridge to Chertsey Bridge
Follow Bridge Road across the River Wey, and turn right by Weybridge lock along a short steep lane to the busy dual carriageway (Weybridge Road). Tun left, then cross at the cycle crossing to join the cycle path on the North side of the road. Turn left and follow this cycle path past St. George's College and over Woburn Hill. As the road curves left towards Addlestone Moor roundabout, continue straight onto the old road (2.2km, 1.4m). Before the fire station, turn right into a short road and then a cycle path beside the school playing field. This leads over a stream to a path across a meadow. Cross the narrow Mead Lane to a fenced path between boatyards, bear left between industrial units, and join Bridge Road at the west end of Chertsey Bridge (3.2km, 2m).
Chertsey Bridge to Staines
Cross Chertsey Bridge with care, as it is narrow and busy with motor traffic.Turn left immediately into Thames Side. Follow this quiet, traffic-calmed road along the riverside. In the reverse direction, you can avoid the need to cross the busy Chertsey Bridge road by passing under the bridge and joining the road through a small car park.
At Laleham (4.24km, 2.6m), the road turns to the right; join the riverside path, past Penton Hook lock, and eventually you will arrive at Staines. The path ends at a railway bridge and you must join the busy Laleham Road and Thames Street (7.5km, 4.7m). If Staines is your destination, it is best to become a pedestrian at this point, at least until you find your way around. If you want to continue along the Thames, cross Staines Bridge then rejoin the towpath on the other side of the river.
