Polly was born in 1857 in East Horsley. Her father may have remarried when she was young, as family legend says that she was brought up by an unking step-mother. In 1881 she was employed as a servant in the home of a wholesale druggist at 14 Birchington Road, Hampstead. She met and married George Simpson and their first child was born at East Horsley in about 1887. By 1901 they were living at Shilbridge in Walberton, Sussex with their children.
